Heavy Duty Motor Oil Guide

Heavy duty motor oils are specially formulated for diesel engines operating under high loads. They need to meet different requirements than passenger vehicle oils.

Why Are Heavy Duty Oils Different?

Commercial vehicles and machinery operate under much harsher conditions than passenger cars: - Long operating hours: 10-16 hours of continuous engine operation per day - High load capacity: Engine stress under tons of load - Extreme temperatures: Internal engine temperatures reach much higher levels - Soot and carbon buildup: Diesel engines produce more soot

Choosing the Right Viscosity

  • 20W-50: Ideal for hot climates and high-mileage heavy duty engines. Provides superior wear protection with thick oil film.
  • 15W-40: The most common heavy duty viscosity. Suitable for both European and American designed engines. Can be safely used in turbocharged engines, low emission vehicles, and light trucks with high mileage.
  • 10W-40: Suitable for modern engines operating across wide temperature ranges. Provides easier cold starts. Offers high performance in construction, agriculture, and heavy transport.

API Standards

  • API CK-4: (2016): The current heavy duty diesel standard, replacing CJ-4. Maintains traditional HTHS viscosity for full compatibility with existing fleet vehicles.
  • API FA-4: (2016): Introduced alongside CK-4. Focuses on fuel economy with lower HTHS viscosity. Should only be used in FA-4 approved engines, not backward compatible.
  • API CJ-4 / CI-4: Older standards. Still valid for engines from the CI-4 (2002) and CJ-4 (2006) era.

ACEA Heavy Duty Standards

  • ACEA E4: Long drain intervals, superior performance (non-DPF engines)
  • ACEA E7: Mid-level performance, EGR-equipped engines (non-DPF)
  • ACEA E8: (2022): Current successor to E4, low ash (Low SAPS), DPF compatible
  • ACEA E11: (2022): Current successor to E7, low ash (Low SAPS), DPF compatible
  • MB-Approval 228.3 / MAN M 3275: Manufacturer approvals

Applications

  1. Road transport: Long-haul trucks and tractors
  2. Public transit: City buses
  3. Construction: Excavators, dozers, loaders
  4. Agriculture: Tractors and harvesters
  5. Mining: Heavy machinery

Choosing the right heavy duty oil extends engine life and reduces maintenance costs.
